Ander Burnell Henderson, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, returned home to his loving Heavenly Father on July 25, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Born on July 28, 1936, in Blackshear, Georgia, Ander was the son of James and Birdie Henderson. After graduating from Blackshear High School, he answered a call to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—a commitment that marked the beginning of a lifetime of faith and service. Following his mission, Ander proudly served his country in the United States Army.
After his honorable discharge, Ander married Nancy Allen Carr and began a career in retail management, leading stores such as Belk and Drug Emporium in Atlanta and throughout Georgia. He was a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ and a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, generously sharing his time, talents, and resources to further the work of the Gospel.
Ander found joy in simple pleasures: walking by the beach, serving in the Temple, and always searching for the best fried shrimp in Georgia. He loved gathering pecans, often mailing them off to family and friends with the hopeful suggestion they’d come back as chocolate chip cookies. Ander sang hymns with a warmth and reverence that lifted the hearts of others. He was never without a story or a scripture and lived by two enduring mottos: “play it by ear” and “look on the bright side.”
He was preceded in death by his wives, Nancy Allen Carr Henderson of Giles County, VA, Shirley Kirkland Henderson of Douglas, GA, and Betty Simmons of Hazlehurst, GA. He is survived by his children, Randy (Alison) and Gina (Michael), along with four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 23, at 1:00 PM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6632 Laurel Island Parkway. A private interment will follow at Satilla Memorial Gardens in Douglas, Georgia.
