Arley Robert Hughes, a long-time resident of Kingsland, GA, passed away peacefully at his home in Columbia, SC on Tuesday, August 22 surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death earlier this year by his wife of 60 years, Peggy Ann Pitts Hughes.
He is survived by his daughter Deborah (Kenny) Warden of Columbia, SC, grandchildren David Warden of Columbia, SC, and Rachel Warden of Richmond, VA, his brother Larry (Mary) Hughes of New Braunfels, Tx.
Besides his parents, Arley and Edith Hughes and his wife, Peggy, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Elnor Simpson and brother, Billy Hughes.
"Brother Bob," as many in the community knew him, was born in Appling County, Georgia. A graduate of Lumber City High School, he went on to serve in the United States Air Force. He and his young family moved to Camden County in 1968 to work as a journeyman electrician, and eventually retired as a supervisor in the electrical shop at Gilman Paper Company. His reputation was one of consistency, integrity, hard work, and, most of all, faith.
While he provided for his family as an electrician, his passion and true calling was that of a pastor. He was ordained to the ministry at Magnolia Baptist Church in 1972 and subsequently served Camden County churches as pastor at Magnolia Baptist Church & Forest View Baptist Church in the Colesburg community, interim pastor at First Baptist Church of Woodbine, pastor, then minister of education for Friendship Baptist Church in Kingsland, Children's pastor at First Baptist Church Kingsland, and an Associate Pastor at Westside Baptist Church in St. Marys. He was willing and ready to share the gospel any time he was asked. He also served as Moderation for Southeast Association of the Georgia Baptist Convention. After retiring from the mill, he served as a volunteer chaplain at Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus for many years where he was a well-known figure. Along the way, he earned a bachelor's degree in theology from Luther Rice Seminary, and master's and doctorate degrees from Andersonville Theological Seminary.
