In Loving Memory of Bernadette "Penny" Penelope Thomas
November 13, 1961 - September 15, 2023
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on November 13, 1961, to the late Almeta Thomas, Bernadette Penelope Thomas, affectionately known as "Penny," received her education from Duval County Public School.
If you knew Penny, you knew a woman who found joy in dancing. In Junior High, Penny, alongside her best friend Precious, formed cheerleading squads that engaged in friendly competitions. Not stopping there, she also created a dance team that captured the hearts of audiences in Jacksonville, winning accolades, and applause. This love for dance became a defining element of Penny's life.
In the early 1990s, Penny relocated to Woodbine, GA, where she became a beloved presence in the Woodbine community. Her infectious spirit and signature greeting, "Heyyyyyyy Baby," became synonymous with the warmth and kindness she extended to everyone she met.
Penny was preceded in death by her siblings, Yolanda Hodges, and Vondo Thomas, as well as her aunts Marion Harley and Jacques Sheppard.
She is survived by her loving children: Timotheous Van Thomas of Wildomar, California; Bernadette Penelope Hensley (Alfonzo) of Houston, Texas; and Christopher Thomas of Woodbine, Georgia. Her legacy lives on through her cherished grandchildren: Jaelin A. Thomas, King J. Braimah, Selena P. Thomas, Eli K. Braimah, Alanna P. Hensley, and Joa’Quin Herring.
Penny is also survived by her nephew, Rouzard Thomas (Frances), and bonus sons, Vedero Byrd, and Jamar Johnson. Her extended family includes a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and family friends, among them Sakina Bell and Jackie Lovett.
To Penny's extended family in Woodbine, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your support and love during this challenging time. Penny's memory lives on through the lives she touched, the dance she shared, and the love she generously gave.
Thank you for being a part of Penny's journey and for sharing in the love and joy she brought to our lives.
With love and remembrance,
The Children of Bernadette "Penny" Penelope Thomas
