Betty Gay

August 6, 1938 — December 13, 2024

Betty Ann (Newton) Gay, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished matriarch of a large and loving family, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, at the age of 86. Her life was a testament to faith, love, and dedication, and her legacy will live on through the many lives she touched.

Born on August 6, 1938, in Valley Station, Kentucky, Betty was the daughter of the late John and Mary Elizabeth Newton. She married the love of her life, Cecil Gay, and together they shared many joyful years. Though Cecil passed away many years ago, Betty’s unwavering love for him endured, and their bond remained a cornerstone of her life.

Betty lived a long, vibrant life filled with love and laughter. Her greatest joy was her family, who cherished her deeply. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel special, and her quick wit and spirited personality made her the heart of every gathering. Betty also had a love for sparkly fashion, and her wardrobe was filled with outfits that shimmered and shone, reflecting her vibrant personality. Her dazzling style brought joy to those around her and became a cherished part of her identity.

She was deeply involved in her family’s lives, never missing a chance to celebrate milestones, offer advice (sometimes unsolicited but always heartfelt), or simply be there when they needed her most. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life well-lived, and she will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Betty’s devotion to her family was unmatched. She lovingly raised seven children, teaching them the values of kindness, perseverance, and faith. As a grandmother and great-grandmother, she brought immeasurable joy to the younger generations, sharing her wisdom, traditions, and unconditional love. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren cherished her guidance, and she took immense pride in watching them grow and thrive.

She leaves behind her children, Shelly Gay Stokely, Lonnie (Stephanie) Gay, Trisha (Raymond) Butts, Elaine Gay Allen, Dale (Gina) Gay, and Cecil (Carrie) Gay Jr.; eighteen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren (and counting); many extended family members; and countless friends whose lives she touched.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Gay Sr.; her son, Ed Gay; her great-granddaughter, Nora Tucker; and numerous siblings.

A funeral Mass will be held in her honor at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 12:00 PM, visitation will be held an hour prior. Burial to follow at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles in Betty’s memory.

Betty will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with Cecil in the embrace of the Lord.
