Dan Rowell
February 28, 1930 — June 12, 2009
Mr. Dan Rowell, Jr. , 79 of Woodbine passed away Friday evening, June 12th, 2009 at Shands Medical Center in Jacksonville.
Mr. Rowell was a native of Orange County, Florida. He was born in Lake Pickett on February 28th, 1930 and is the son of the late Daniel W. ”Dan, Sr.” Rowell, Sr. and Christine Elizabeth” Bessie” Long Rowell. A child of the depression, Dan Rowell Jr. spent his youth in Orange County Florida, racing stock cars and motorcycles. He went on to join the United States Army and served 2 tours of duty in Korea. He later received the Bronze Star and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm for outstanding service and dedication during his tour in Vietnam. He went on to marry Nancy in the early 1950’s and had 4 children. After the military in 1972, Dan spent the next 20 years traveling the highways as a long distance truck driver. He retired again in 2001 and spent his remaining years fishing in the rivers of New Mexico and off the Georgia Coast. He liked riding his motorcycle and enjoying his remaining time with his loving family.
Mr. Rowell is survived by his children, Nan Cuccia (John) of Woodbine, Fay Potter (Ronald) of Brunswick, Ann Hall of Boynton Beach, Fl., and Don Rowell of Woodbine; his sister, Bessie Mae Hawkins (Robert) of Orlando, Fl. and brother, Julius Rowell of Florida; his companion, Nancy Ree Karrer, his 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, plus several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Rowell was preceded in death by his grandson, Arthur Timothy Newbury and his great-grandson Devin Alexander Baldwin.
A visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 pm Monday June 15th, 2009 at the funeral home.
The funeral service will be held at 2 pm Tuesday June 16th, 2009 in the Edo Miller Chapel with Pastor JD Smith presiding. Casket bearers will be John S. Cuccia, Jr., John Cuccia, III, John Hall, James Rowell, Jonathan Hall, and Damian DeProspero.
Interment will follow the service at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland with military honors.
