David Rainer

January 21, 1936 — December 4, 2023

David L. Rainer left this earthly home on December 4, 2023.  He passed through Heaven’s doors to be with the Eternal Light forever.  He was born to Richard Porter and Avis Sellers Rainer on January 21, 1936.  He had two brothers and three sisters.  He was born in Livingston, Alabama and spent the first twenty-three years of his life in Livingston.  David worked hard for Camden County for over 50 years (4 in Liberty County).

David is preceded in death by parents Avis Sellers Rainer and Richard Porter Rainer, sisters Avis Juanita Hester and brothers Ernie Gene Rainer and Richard Franklin Rainer.  Survivors include his lovely devoted wife of 64, the former Yvonne Peoples whom he married on June 1, 1959.  David left two surviving sons:  David Lee Rainer, Jr. (Silvia) and Alan Eldred Rainer (Janet) of Kingsland, Georgia and one granddaughter, Jennifer Rainer of Jacksonville, Florida.  Also surviving are two sisters:  Joyce Corley (Eugene) of Foley, Alabama and Agnes Dew of Cuba, Alabama and many nephews and nieces.

David attended elementary school in Livingston, graduated from Livingston High School in 1954.  He graduated from the University of West Alabama in 1958 with a B.S. in Education.  All three were in visual view of each other.  He grew up on a farm and spent many hours hunting, fishing and horseback riding over the gentle rolling hills of West Alabama.  Deer hunting was his favorite.

After graduation from UWA he sought a teaching position.  In early August of 1958 he received an interview offer from the Camden County Schools in Southeast Georgia.  He went for an interview and took the position of seventh grade teacher in the Kingsland Elementary School.  In late August of 1959, he left Alabama and never returned to live.  He made numerous visits back home to see his relatives or see the Crimson Tide play football in Tuscaloosa.  ROLL TIDE!

After three years of teaching he became principal of Kingsland Elementary School in 1961.  He served in that position until January 1, 1965 when he became Superintendent of Schools.  He earned his Master of Education Degree (Med) from The University of Georgia in 1963.  He earned his Education Specialists Degree in 1971 from The University of Georgia (UGA).

As he took the office of School Superintendent of Camden County on January 1, 1965 little did he know that he would not retire from that position until January 1, 2000.  Over those thirty-five years he served all but four years as Superintendent of Camden County Schools.  He served twenty years (1965 – 1984).  He lost the election in 1984 by 14 votes.  He won the election in 1988 overwhelmingly and returned as superintendent of Camden County Schools on January 1, 1989.  He retired effective January 1, 2000.

During the four years he was not in Camden County he served as assistant Superintendent in Liberty County Schools in Hinesville, Georgia (1985 – 1988).

David also served as a financial consultant for the Glynn County School Systems during the years 2000 – 2001.  The school system was in tremendous debt and with David’s advice, the Glynn County School System was out of debt within a year.

David served on numerous boards and commissions; some of them were Georgia State Elementary and Middle Schools State Committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  He served four years as Chair of the Georgia Committee.  He served six years as Chair of the First District Superintendents Association (1994 – 2000).  He served for six years as President of the First District Superintendent Association (1994 – 2000).

In 1995, he was named “Georgia Superintendent of The Year” by Georgia Association of Educational Leaders (GAEL).  In 1985 he was named “Person of the Year” of Camden County United Way, an organization that he played a significant role in establishing.  In 1994, the Camden County Board of Education named an elementary school in his honor (David L. Rainer Elementary School).  David supervised a massive building program in 1989 – 2000.  During this time, eight new schools were constructed in Camden County.  The school spent over $120,000,000 for school construction during this period.  The school population of Camden County in 1982 was 3,400.  In 1999 -2000, the student population was over 10,000.

From 2000 – 2012 he served on the Camden County Board of Commissioners.  He served as Chairman for eight of the twelve years.  He was a member of the Kingsland Frist United Methodist Church for more than fifty years where he served in various committees and positions such as Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, Finance Chairman and others.

David started being a fan of the Crimson Tide in 1946.  Every Saturday he looked forward to listening to Alabama football on the radio!  He became a football ticket holder in 1989 for 38 years.

David spent 5 years in the Alabama National Guard from 1953 – 1958.

David’s priorities in life were God and his loving family, Alabama football and the Camden County Community. David was always kind and generous and looked for the best in others.
