Dixie Hitchcock Bickley

Mrs. Dixie C. Hitchcock Bickley age 92, of Griffin, GA, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Spalding Regional Hospital.

Dixie was born on February 14, 1922 in Bartow County, GA to the late John L. and Edna Young Cowart. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Louise C. (Davis) Upshaw and Elizabeth C. (Marshall) Bates; brother, C. Lewis Cowart; and husbands, Reuben B. Hitchcock and Thomas I. Bickley.

Dixie was a lady of great faith, who always cared for her family, friends and anyone else who needed it. After raising 2 children, she finally realized her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse by graduating from the LPN program at Griffin Tech at age 51. She worked at the Living Center (now Renaissance) Nursing Home for over 32 years, retiring at age 82.

Dixie was raised in North Georgia by deeply Christian parents and as a young lady began teaching in Sunday School and leading young ladies’ mission study groups, which she continued after marrying and moving to Griffin in 1946. She was active at Second Baptist Church for many years, next joining Southside Baptist Church, and finally First Baptist Church. Dixie was, most recently, a member of the K.I.T. Club at Southside Baptist Church, and a member of the Chapel Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.

Dixie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, J. Michael and Teresa P. Hitchcock; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn H. and T. Wayne Gordon; grandchildren, Tara G. Dobbs, Heather K. Gordon, and Chad M. (Catherine) Hitchcock; great-grandchildren, Sean C. Dobbs, D. Cory Dobbs, A. Garrett Dobbs, Chloe Owens, Chase T. Owens, and Charlotte Hitchcock; stepdaughter, Kaye (Ron) Keller; step-granddaughter, Erin (Michael Hutto) Graves; sisters, Odell C. Head, Hazel C. Mosteller, and sisters-in-law, Nadine M. Cowart, Bobbi Hitchcock, Aline B. Friedsom, Jane Bickley and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Dixie C. Hitchcock Bickley will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 11 am in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home. Reverend Brian McCartney will officiate. Interment will follow in Wax Community Cemetery in Silver Creek, GA at 4 pm. Friends may visit the family on Monday, April 14, 2014 from 6-8 pm at the funeral home.
