Mr. Franklin Delano Norman , 71 of Kingsland passed away quietly at his residence Saturday, July 12th, 2008.
Mr. Norman is a native of Pierce County, Georgia. He was born in Mershon on January 20th, 1937 and grew up in Blackshear. He is the son of the lates Gid and Stella Thornton Norman. Mr. Norman graduated from Pierce County and afterwards joined the US Army. He served a four year tour, which included war torn Korea. Later, Mr. Norman married his soul mate Irene Moore on August 21st, 1964 and they moved to Augusta. In 1968 they moved to Kingsland to make a home for their young family and to take a job with Gilman Paper Company. He became a refiner operator on # 2 machine and retired with 34 years of service.
In his later years, as Mrs. Norman’s health began to decline, he took care of her through the worst until she passed away in June of 2005. One of Mr. Norman’s favorite meeting places to stay in touch with old friends and make new ones was the Whistle Stop Lounge. He regularly stayed in contact with his sister and brothers and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Norman had avid interests in his favorite teams the Atlanta Braves, the Buffalo Bills and the Atlanta Falcons, plus he was one of NASCAR racing’s biggest television fans. He also loved old country music. His children learned from him that giving your word was as good as a signed contract. Because of that they also mused that growing up, a maybe meant yes and that an I’ll think about it or I don’t think so meant to go ask Mom, as he didn’t like to give a definite answer unless it was concrete. He was a member of the Browntown Baptist Church. He will be missed by family and friends alike.
Mr. Norman is survived by his children and their spouses, Karen and Louis Wright of Kingsland, David and April Norman of San Diego, Ca., and Pete and Brandy Norman of Kingsland; his sister Beatrice Johns of Augusta; his brothers and their wives, Thomas and Betty Norman of Fairburn, Georgia and Larry and Anita Norman of Blackshear; his grandchildren, Joseph Franklin and Gennifer Irene Wright, Garrett Wade Pittman, and Angelina Rose Norman; plus several nieces and nephews. Mr. Norman was preceded in death by his wife Irene, his brothers, J.W., Richard, Joseph, and Dick Norman and his sister, Evelyn Norman.
A visitation was held at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 from 6 until 9 PM.
Funeral services were held in the Browntown Baptist Church at 11:00 AM on Wednesday July 16th, 2008 with Pastor Seymore Groover presiding. Casket bearers were Joey and Louis Wright, David and Pete Norman, William Drain and Nick Schaeffer. Interment followed at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland.
