Harry Callahan

Mr. Harry Lewis Callahan , age 85, went to be with the Lord on the evening of Monday, June 26 th , 2017 at his home in Kingsland, Ga. surrounded by his family.
Mr. Callahan was born October 3 rd , 1931 in Waycross, Ga. to the late Warren Clinton and Stella Mullis Callahan.
Harry was born in Waycross, but grew up in Blackshear, Ga on the family dairy farm. He was a member of the Pierce County High School football and basketball teams. After graduating high school he worked at the farm. Harry wed Dixie Lou Steedley on August 1 st 1954. In 1955 they moved to St. Marys where he started working for Gilman Paper Company. He began at the bottom and worked his way up the ladder and ended his career as Superintendent of Shipping and Finishing. He worked for Gilman for over 40 years before retiring.
Harry was past president of the Camden County Quarterback Club. He took his family to football games all over Georgia.  Harry and Dixie have had reserved seating at the Camden County High School Wildcat Stadium and still hold tickets today.
Harry was a Camden County Commissioner for several terms and enjoyed politics.
Harry purchased his first horse, Trigger in 1964 and got his family involved with the Broken Spur Saddle Club. He was one of the founders of the club, which at the time was located on Scrubby Bluff Rd., St. Marys. In 1970, Harry and several of the men purchased the property on Vacuuna Rd. in Kingsland which is still active today. He was a past president of Broken Spur Saddle Club, Coastal Plains Association and also of the Georgia Federation of Saddle Clubs. He did several years in a variety of positions with the clubs. Harry was an honorary member of the Broken Spur Saddle Club. He involved his family in horse shows and loved the competition.
Harry and Dixie’s love for NASCAR took them to the Daytona 500 every year. If not attending they were watching every race on TV.
Harry and Dixie were members of the First Baptist Church of St. Marys until 1985 and they moved their membership to Kingsland First Baptist.  They are members of the Wendy Mann Sunday School class and the Tuesday Senior Bible Study group.
Mr. Callahan is survived by his beloved wife, Dixie Lou Callahan of Kingsland, Ga.; his daughters, Martha Lou (Dale) Peeples of Kingsland, Barbara Ann (Donnie) Crews of Colesburg Community in Woodbine, Ga. and Harriette (Steve) Blount of Kingsland, Ga.; his grandchildren, Scott (Courtney) Clark, and Shannon Gatch, all of Kingsland,Ga.; Megan Allen of Anchorage, Ak, David (Randa) Head of Germany, Jason (Becca) Head of St. Marys, Ga.; Adam Crews of Brunswick, Ga.; his great grandchildren, Chloe and Bailey Clark of Kingsland, Ga.; Levi Thornton of Virginia, Hayden and Brystol Head of St. Marys, Ga.; Addison Head of Germany, Maddie Hatcher of Mississippi, Olivia and Jackson Gatch of Kingsland, Ga.; and Ava Allen of Anchorage, Ak.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his parents, Mr. Callahan was also preceded in passing by his numerous brothers and sisters.
Calling hours for Mr. Callahan will be from 10 am to 11 am Saturday, July 1 st . 2017 at the Kingsland First Baptist Church in Kingsland, Ga. Funeral services will follow at 11 am at the church with Pastor Rick Brodie presiding. Pallbearers will be Jason Head, Jim Callahan, Leon Cochran, Billy Cochran, Butch Minchew, Devon Minchew, Mike Millan, and Zach Millan. Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of Wendy Mann Sunday School Class at Kingsland First Baptist Church. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, Ga.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Callahan’s name to the Hospice of the Golden Isles/ 1692 Glynco Parkway Brunswick, GA 31525.
Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland, Ga. is entrusted with Mr. Callahan’s arrangements.
