Mr. Howard McGill, age 80 of Woodbine, Ga. passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 22nd, 2022 at the Senior Care Center in St. Marys, Ga.
Mr. McGill was born April 8th, 1941 in Nashville, Ga. to the late Bud, Sr. and Lenore McGill.
Howard met his wife Mary Lou while working in the produce department of Winn Dixie in Jacksonville, FL and the two were married for over 50 years. He went on to later open his own grocery store in Woodbine, Ga. and after he “retired” he opened a produce store in Kingsland, Ga. Howard never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face and a joke on his lips. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially taking them fishing.
His son, Timmy, shared this memory of his dad, “Once, while working in my father’s store, a man pulled up in front in a beat up station wagon with his wife and 4 small children in the back seat. He came up to Dad and asked if he could spare $5 for gas. He was trying to get to Florida to his family to try and start over. Dad could tell that he didn’t have much and asked him if he and his family were hungry. He told him to bring the kids in to grab a snack and grabbed a shopping cart and a Styrofoam cooler and proceeded to fill it with sodas and juices, lunchmeat, cheese and assorted condiments. He added bread, chips and other food to the cart. I think that when he finished, he had 4 or 5 big grocery bags worth of food. He gave the guy $20 and I’ve never seen gratitude in someone’s face like that again. That’s what made me the person that I am today."
Mr. McGill is survived by his children, Terri Cortez of Jacksonville, Fl., Melissa Deen of St. Marys, Ga., and Tim (Wendy) McGill of Kingsland, Ga.; his grandchildren, Megan McGill, Corey (Mariah) McGill, Anthony (Daniela) Russo, Julia Russo, Brandon (Natalie) Deen, and Chandler Deen; his great-grandchildren, Aubrey Critchley, Zachary McGill, and Courtney McGill; his sister, Patsy Martin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his parents, Mr. Howard also joins his wife, Mary Louise McGill, his sister, Evelyn, and brothers, Harold McGill, Felton McGill, Alton McGill, and Bud McGill, Jr. in Heaven.
A visitation will be held at time 1 pm – 2 pm Saturday, March 26th, 2022 at Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland, Ga. Funeral services will follow immediately with Chaplain Tony Parker presiding. Interment will be held privately in Colesburg Cemetery in Woodbine, Ga.
