Jack Sutton

Jack L. Sutton, Sr., age 96, passed away on the evening of Friday, April 25th, 2025, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Ga. He was born on November 4th, 1928, in Ocilla, Ga. to the late Fred, Sr. and Georgia Sutton. Jack grew up in Ocilla, GA. with his brothers and sisters. After he finished high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served our country from 1947 to 1952. He served in Guam and the Philippines during the World War II Rehabilitation, helping the citizens to rebuild their country. He also served in the Korean War on the USS RENDOVA (CVE114). After being honorably discharged from the Navy, they moved to Athens, Ga., where he studied veterinary medicine at the University of Georgia. On January 20th, 1950, he married the love of his life, Vivian Warnes, and God allowed them to be side by side for 71 years. God gave them six wonderful children, Brad, Jimmy, Melinda Gay, Johnny, Georgia and Fred. They were blessed with 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

The Sutton family moved to Kingsland, Ga. in 1962. Jack worked for Gilman Paper Mill for 23 years before retiring. He and Vivian owned and operated three Jack's BBQ restaurants for 20 years. He was very active in the community, serving as a Camden County Commissioner from 1981 through 1984 and then again from 1987 to 1990. Two of these years he served as Chairman. He was the first Civilian to go on a Nuclear Submarine (U.S.S. MARIANO G. VALLEJO (SSBN 658)) at Kings Bay in September 1988. Jack will be greatly missed by his family and all that knew him.

He is survived by his children, Jimmy (Joyce Martin) Sutton of Jacksonville, Fl. Melinda Gay Hartfelder of St Marys, Ga.; Johnny (Jolynne Sheffield) Sutton of Claxton, Ga, Georgia Marie (George) Edwards, and Fred (Dena Volpe) Sutton of Brunswick, Ga.; his sister, Carolyn Sutton Cartledge, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; his grandchildren, Jill Sutton Lewis, Wayne (Michelle) Sutton, Shane (Tammy) Snipes, Leah (George) Stahle, Cali (Jacob) Davis, Caleb Sutton, Preston (Kelsey) Edwards, Sophia Edwards, Jessica Dingle, Drew (Annamay) Sutton, Cory Sutton, Evan Sutton, Jennifer (Aaron) Akers and Christine (Christian) Blackmon.

Besides his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vivian Warnes Sutton; his son, Brad Kenneth Sutton and granddaughter, Sara Faith Edwards, and his sister, Martha Claire (Bill) Todd of Cummings, Ga.; and his brothers, Kenneth W. Sutton (Dot); Fred C. Sutton (LaVerne) and his brother-in-law, Dr. Densford Cartledge.

Visitation is from 1 pm to 2 pm on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025, at Coastal Camden Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 2 pm on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025, in the Chapel of Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland, Ga. Interment and military honors will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland, Ga. Pallbearers are Carter Sutton, Sage Mayeux, Shane Snipes, Cody Snipes, Eddie Orvin and Caleb Sutton.
