John Blount

November 10, 1922 — December 28, 2015

Mr. John Terry Blount, Sr., returned to his Heavenly home early Monday morning, December 28th, 2015 after 93 years on this Earth. As a friend or acquaintance, you may have known him as J.T., Jake, John or Mr. Blount. The late Mae and Charlie Blount of Blackshear, Georgia called him son. J.T. was born to them on November 10th, 1922. Charles Blount, Sr., of Blackshear, Georgia, Clarence Blount of Waycross, Georgia, & Horace and Leon Blount now both deceased, called him brother. He was husband to the late Jenny Elizabeth Miller,, Margaret Louise Cason, and Josephine (Joy) Chui. He helped raise nine children. Elizabeth Blount, Crescent City, FL, Marianne Graf-Thomas, Blackshear, GA, Janice McCormick (Mike), Humble, TX, Jonnie Mericle (Bob), St. Augustine, FL, Bridgette Blount-Goss (John), Bel Aire, TX, Steve Blount (Harriette) Kingsland, GA, the late Ronald Blount, Sr. ,John Terry Blount, Jr., Kingsland, GA, Lisa Moore (Wade), Kingsland, Ga. He will always be Daddy to us. Papa J.T. was blessed with 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
J.T. was born and raised in Blackshear, GA, on the family farm. After graduating high school he attended trade school in Albany, GA, and became a machinist. He worked as an air machinist in Brunswick, GA, building liberty ships during World War II.   In 1944, J.T. moved to St. Marys, GA and drove the “Doodlebug,” a train that ran between Kingsland and St. Marys. In 1945, J.T. joined Gilman Paper Company, working in the Power Plant. He was promoted to the Instrument Shop where he worked as an instrument mechanic until he retired in 1998 at the age of 75.
In 1953, J.T. volunteered at Gilman Credit Union (United 1st). In 1971, he was asked to serve on the board of directors. In 1974, J.T. was elected President, a position he held until his retirement in 2011.
His loves included the water, the rivers and creeks around St. Marys, boating, fishing, shrimping, crabbing and gathering oysters to share with family and friends, and the beaches of Cumberland Island, where he took his children and grandchildren to picnic, play in the surf and gather shells, and where he seined with his friends for mullet when the tide was just right. He will be missed.
Calling hours for the Blount family will be from 6 to 8 pm Thursday, December 31st, 2015 in the Woods-Wainwright Chapel of Coastal Camden Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Friday, January 1st, 2016 at the St. Marys First Baptist Church in St. Marys, Ga. with Pastor Steven Kegley presiding. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, John Brandon Blount, John Terry Blount, III, Ronnie Blount, Jr., John Alexander Goss , and John Charles Mericle & his grandson in law, Marty Turner. Honorary bearers will be Bill Allen, Skipper Boone, Terry Brown, Wayne Caldwell, Billy Hope, Leslie Linker, Bobby Mitchell, Gerald Roberts, Dick Rowell, Webster Steverson and Martin Turner. Interment will follow the funeral service in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, Ga.
