John Mckenney

Mr. John Wayne McKenney, age 73 of Woodbine, Ga. passed away on the morning of January, 1st, 2023 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Ga.

Mr. McKenney was born on June 9th, 1949 in Woodbine, Ga. to the late John McKenney and late Annie Carter Mangham.

He was a lifelong resident of Camden County and attended Woodbine High School before joining the US Army. Once in the army, he became a tank crewmember, was stationed in Korea, and later went to Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart and served there until 1970. With his enlistment over in 1972, he took the skills he learned in the service to become a heavy equipment operator. He later became a supervisor for heavy equipment on many projects from the east coast out to Texas for over 25 years with various companies.

Mr. McKenney was an avid fisherman. As a young teen, he worked on many shrimp boats. His family recounted that he was a very private man, who loved his family deeply. He will be greatly missed.
Mr. McKenney is survived by his son, John “Dana” McKenney of Murfreesboro, Tn.; his sister, Kathy McKenney of Woodbine, Ga.; his grandchildren, Courtney McKenney, John Grayson McKenney, and Natalie Schroth; his nephew, Michael (Charlene) Sha-Ling, and his great niece and nephew, Ashelei McKenney & Ethan Hedricks.

Besides his parents, Mr. McKenney was preceded in passing by his brother, George “Billy” Downing.

A graveside service will be held at 11 am Thursday, January 5th, 2023 in Colesburg Cemetery in Woodbine, Ga. with Clifton Roberson presiding. US Army Honors will be rendered at the graveside.
