Mr. Kenneth Carey Hollis , 82 of Waynesville passed away peacefully surrounded by his family late afternoon Friday, November 26th, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Hollis was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10th, 1928. He is the son of the late Donald Smith and Sarah Jane Carey Hollis. At age five, his family moved to New Buffalo, Michigan, and it was home until his graduation from New Buffalo High School. After high school, Mr. Hollis entered the US Marine Corps at the close of WWII, serving from 1946 to1947. He reenlisted in 1949 and served in the Korean War from 1951 to1953, becoming a buck sergeant. Later, Mr. Hollis worked for 28 years with Mosquito Control in Brunswick, Ga. retiring in 1992.
His family said of him that he loved his country and was a true patriot, that he was charitable, faithful, strong, obedient, gentle and respectful, and that he loved life and felt that it was always worth living. He was also completely devoted to his God and his family. The Hollis’s are traditional Catholics, belonging to St. Michael the Archangel in Jacksonville, Fl. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Ila Jo Meeks Hollis of Waynesville; his children, Teresa Maryann (John) Turlington of Hortense and Paul ‘JJ’ Hollis of Dover Bluff; his brother, Jack Hollis of Michigan City, Indiana; and his grandchildren, John Thomas and Anthony Michael Turlington, and several nieces and nephews.
A requiem mass will be held at 10 am Monday, November 29th, 2010 at St. Michaels the Archangel Catholic Church in Jacksonville, Fl. Funeral services for Mr. Hollis will be at 11 AM Tuesday, November 30th, 2010 in the Wainwright Chapel at the funeral home with Father Marshal Roberts of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Jacksonville presiding. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
