Lou Ann McCollum Johnson, 67, of Kingsland passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, after an extended illness.
Lou Ann was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on June 29, 1953. She graduated from Camden County High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Valdosta State University in 1975 and promptly became licensed to practice nursing in both Georgia and Florida. Lou Ann began her nursing career at Memorial Medical Center in Jacksonville. Beginning in 1979, she worked in her father’s medical practice in Kingsland.
In 1989, David Rainer, then superintendent of Camden County Schools, asked her to pioneer Camden’s school nurse program. She established a nurse in each school and introduced a long list of new programs, many of which she designed herself. Lou Ann was named the Georgia School Nurse of the Year in 2000. She was loved and highly respected during her service in these positions. She retired in 2001.
Lou Ann is survived by her devoted and loving husband, James M. Johnson of 43 years; her two children, Jill Johnson of Jacksonville and Joanna Johnson Herndon of Kingsland; one brother, James R. McCollum (Mary) of Kingsland and one sister, LaRoyce McCollum of Golden, Colorado; granddaughters, Kailee Herndon and Abigail Herndon of Kingsland; nieces, Susan Fountain Hines of Golden, Elizabeth McCollum Berry (Steve) of Golden Oak, Florida and Suzanne McCollum Johnson (Jeff) of Gray; two nephews, Jim Fountain (Debbie) of Lula and Butch Livingston of Athens; caregiver, Melissa Cook of Kingsland; close and dear friends, Teresa McDill and Cathy Trednick of Kingsland; and by many grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Minnie Gross McCollum and Dr. Roy R. McCollum.
Lou Ann was a member of Kingsland First United Methodist Church. She will be remembered by everyone who knew her for her generous spirit, her sense of humor, her love of the color purple, her million dollar pound cake that she shared with others and her genuine love of people.
She enjoyed many years of boating, fishing and swimming at their Harrietts Bluff home. Lou Ann enjoyed these times with her parents, her husband, children, grandchildren, family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 2, at Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at Lawnwood Cemetery in Kingsland. Jack Gross Sr., her first cousin, will be officiating.Pallbearers will be Stephen Bevan, Bobby Childers, Bryan Clark, Jonathan McDill, Jim Fountain, Bill Gross, Jim Ed Gross and Sid Gross.
