Mack was born in Blackshear, Georgia to Wiley Thrift and Mae Carter Thrift. He was preceded in death by his mother and father as well as 3 sisters, Alice Jordan, Agness Sowyers and Leatha Miller; 2 brothers, Grean “Buddy” Thrift and Wiley Wade Thrift and a sister-in-law Annette Thrift. He was also preceded in death by several nieces and nephews as well as his favorite k-9 companion GiGi.
He leaves to mourn his passing 2 brothers Joe Thrift and Eddie Thrift both of Woodbine; 2 sisters-in-law, Joyce Thrift of Kingsland and Sharon Suarez of St. Marys; and 1 brother-in-law Glenn Miller of Woodbine. Mack never married or had children, but had many nieces and nephews he loved like his very own.
Mack had a hard start to life. He contracted polio when he was around 2 years old, but he never let it hold him down. Rehabilitation included trips to Warm Springs, Ga. where he met President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on one of his visits.
He trained in the dry cleaning business, but really enjoyed being in the outdoors. He became one of the best heavy equipment operators working on interstate projects, dredging at Kings Bay preparing for the submarines and eventually retired from Camden County where he worked at the landfill. He had a strong work ethic and was a great example for his family.
Mack enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. He could tell the best fishing and hunting tales. The fish got bigger with every telling. After retirement he enjoyed Sunday drives and eating at some of his favorite spots with his brother Buddy.
He is a member of White Oak Pentecostal Church where he enjoyed fellowship with other believers.
Graveside service will be held at 10 am Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Colesburg Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Drury officiating. Active pallbearers are Wade Thrift, Alan Sasser, Dustin McCoy, John Royce Proctor, Samantha Cardenas Paul Miller, and Brandon Sasser.
His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Golden Isles.
