Powell Wheaton

June 28, 1926 — August 22, 2014

Mr. Powell Wheaton, age 88, passed away in the early hours of Friday, August 22, 2014 at Spalding Regional Hospital in Griffin, Ga.

Mr. Wheaton was born in Griffin, Ga on June 28, 1926 to the late Robin Madison Wheaton and the late Evelyn Powell Wheaton. He served in the United States Air Force and was a World War II veteran. Mr. Wheaton was a member and Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, a 1993 inductee into the Griffin Sports Hall of Fame and a member of the Griffin High School State Champion football team of 1942. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology, then later graduated from Auburn University. Before retiring to his hometown of Griffin, he owned a fine home merchandise business in Atlanta.

Mr. Wheaton was also preceded in death by his wife, Carollyn E. Wheaton, brother Robin Madison Wheaton, Jr., sister-in-law Darian Brown Wheaton and nephew Robert Scott Wheaton.

Mr. Wheaton is survived by his niece, Darian Wheaton Bardwell, nephew Robin McCulley Wheaton, two stepsons, Benjiman Todd Townsend and Michael Lynded Townsend, six great-nieces and nephews and two great-great-nieces.
