Mr. Richard Ludwig Hammerschmidt , 78 of Kingsland passed away at his residence on the evening of Saturday, June 4th, 2011.
Mr. Hammerschmidt was born in Lindenhurst Long Island, New York on January 15th, 1933. He is the son of the late Ernest and Irene Bullard Hammerschmidt. Mr. Hammerschmidt proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He later earned a Masters degree in engineering and went to work with NASA. Mr. Hammerschmidt was the head of critical safety program for the Apollo 11 astronauts. He was a Mason and a Shriner, a member of the American Legion and attended the King of Peace Episcopal Church in Kingsland.
Mr. Hammerschmidt is survived by his wife, Micheline Bedard Hammerschmidt of Kingsland; his sons, Alan Hammerschmidt of West Palm Beach, Fl., Kurt Hammerschmidt of Colorado, and Rick Hammerschmidt of Taunton, Ma.; and his brother, Fred (Anna) Hammerschmidt of Milledgeville, Ga. Besides his parents, Mr. Hammerschmidt was also preceded in passing by his son George Hammerschmidt.
A memorial service will be held at 4pm on Friday, June 10th, 2011 at King of Peace Episcopal Church in Kingsland with Father Iani Sastre presiding. Interment of his ashes will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Ma. at a later date.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to Heartland Hospice, 446 Scranton Road, Unit 103, Brunswick, Ga. 31520-1946.
