Bob was very dedicated to his family, town, and work. He was involved in his children’s lives by being a coach and supportive father with their sports. He was a loving grandfather to his grandchildren, where he would make them “PeePaw Milkshakes” together. He would drop anything he was doing to help his kids or grandkids with anything they may have needed. But most of all, he was a loving husband. Within the 48 years of marriage to his wife, Terri, he helped her start an arts league in Mt Airy, took her on fall drives for her photography, and ALWAYS pulled the car over if she asked because she saw a photo opportunity.
He dedicated over 20 years of his life to Giant Food as a grocery manager, front-end manager, and started to work his way up to store manager. He worked over 20 years at Halpro Inc. (a family owned and run machine shop) as the shop manager helping make parts when needed. When Halpro closed, he worked for several other machine shops until he retired.
Before kids, he played softball on a Giant Food softball league for several years.
In his kids early years he became a parent helper to Eric’s Tee-Ball team and when we moved from Frederick to Mt. Airy, he moved right into a coaching role later in Eric’s baseball years for the Sr. League. He would switch roles in fall for his daughter, becoming a “cheer dad” as well. He was very dedicated to youth sports and making sure kids were outside playing ball. Being a coach lead Bob to become involved with Parks and Recreation while being Mount Airy Youth Athletic Association (MAYAA) president. He helped other organizations in the area use different sports fields.
Bob also volunteered in Calvary United Methodist Church and ushered for over 10 years. He was on different church committees, including the Kingsmen Bible Study group (even remotely from Georgia), and helped teach Sunday School for middle-school-aged kids. He then moved into the role of teaching confirmation class.
He obtained his Maryland Municipal League Certificate graduating from the Academy for Excellence in Local Government from the University of Maryland, College Park. He did this in one year! Since then, many others have followed in his footsteps. This ultimately ended with Bob running for town office as a councilman, where he won and served for 7 years. He took every position he had in leadership very seriously. He respected, listened, and contemplated all views when loyally serving the town of Mount Airy.
Because of the love and many types of service Bob put into the town of Mount Airy he was inducted into the Mt. Airy Historic Society Hall of Fame in March of 2015. He was very humbled and thought it to be such an honor.
When he moved to Kingsland, GA he started attending Christ Church Camden where he quickly grew into the role of greeter. He also hosted a small message-based group in his home, making new friends and deepening his faith in Jesus.
Bob’s favorite role was helping to take care of his grandchildren and being close to his son and daughter, who lived in the area.
He was a friend to many and a mentor who loved deeply and shared his knowledge with the people around him. He was available to any person in the town of Mt. Airy and also his current home of Kingsland. He loved reading, playing golf, and serving God… but most of all he loved his family!
He had many loving nicknames like The Dog Whisperer because of his sweet relationship with these four-legged friends. He went by so many other names, such as Gator Bob, The Bob, Councilman, Dad, Daddy, Peepaw, Grandpa and Friend.
He will be sorely missed by everyone who had the opportunity to know and love him.
