Robert Wells

Mr. Robert Charles Wells, Sr. , age 81 of Eagle Blvd in Kingsland, Ga. passed away in the early morning hours on Monday, May 13, 2013 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick.
Mr. Wells was born on April 8 th , 1932 in Flint Michigan. He is the son of the late William Frederick and Margaret Victoria Harlow Kimball.
Mr. Wells family spoke of him, “Dad joined the US Navy in 1950 and was a Korean War veteran. He was a plank owner of the original aircraft carrier U.S.S Enterprise, which is still in service today. He was a retired U.S Navy Chief journalist, whose career in journalism was spawned at Coronado High School in San Diego, Calif., where he graduated in 1950. He worked for Armed Forces Radio in the latter part of his naval career, broadcasting major league baseball games for the California Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers. Following his retirement from the US Navy, he worked for KFMB radio in San Diego in 1970. He served as the sports director at WVEC-TV Ch. 13 in Hampton, VA in 1972. In 1978, he joined the news department at WSVA radio in Harrisonburg. In 1980, he became the sports director for WVIR-TV, Ch.29, a post he held until he retired in 1991. He received the ultimate compliment from his former employer Harold Wright who said his sports show looked like it was done by several people to the viewing public, but we know that you are a one-man band. It was a testament to his work ethic and professionalism. He was an avid golfer who didn’t take up the sport until he was 37 years old, but he persevered and found success in a sport that has frustrated many, including dad. However, he was able to bring home a few trophies, as well as a couple of holes-in-ones. Oh and don’t forget those routine par putts.” He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Mr. Wells is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Lewis of Sacramento, CA., Julie Wells-Keefe and her husband Charles of Lewisville, NC., Merrie Prestridge and her husband Wayman of St.  Marys,  Stacy Markowitz and her husband Mitchell of Frederick, MD.; his son, Robert C. Wells, Jr. and his wife Kim of Pocono Lake, PA.; his grandchildren, Coleman Lewis of Paso Robles, CA, Nolan Lewis of Sacramento, CA., Garrett Lewis of San Diego. CA., Erin Lewis of Paso Robles, CA., Tom Lough of Sacramento, CA.,  David Prestridge and his wife Tricia of Hawaii, Billy Prestridge of Kingsland, Steve Prestridge and his wife Brenda of St. Marys, Rickey Prestridge and his wife Maureen of St. Marys, Rhea Smirlock of California, MD., Leslie Marra of Denver, CO., Adrienna & Stephanie Troisi both of Sayerville, NJ., and Victoria Troisi of Pocono Lake, PA.; and his great grandchildren, Oliver, Christian, Mackenzie, Madison, Brody and Elizabeth Marie Prestridge all of St. Marys, and Dominic and Sebastain Prestridge of Hawaii.
The Wells family will receive friends starting at 10 am, Thursday, May 16 th , 2013 in the funeral home. Interment of his ashes will be held privately by the family at a later date.
