Sgt. Sammie “Vernel” McCutchen, Jr., age 70, passed away on the afternoon of February 24th, 2020 at the Warner Center in Fernandina Beach, Fl.
Sgt. McCutchen was born on August 16th, 1949 in Lula, Fl. to the late Sam McCutchen, Sr. and the late Lillie Mae Wintons.
Sgt. McCutchen joined the US Navy and then was transferred to the National Guard when the Navy reduced forces overseas. After retiring from the National Guard, he worked as a correctional officer. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. His family would like to give a special thanks to his only son in law, Jerry Stephens for acting as a caregiver during his final months.
Sgt. McCutchen is survived by his daughter, Felissa (Jerry) Stephens of Fernandina Beach, Fl. his brothers, Wilber McCutchen, John (Cheryl) McCutchen of Long Beach, Ca., Edward (Minister Earline) McCutchen of Ca., and Minister Melvin (Kathy) Wintons Jr., Milton Wintons, all of Lake City, Fl., and Marion (Sharon) Wintons of Macon, Ga.; his sisters, Marilyn (DeLeon Sr.) Kelly of Lake City, Fl., Brenda Jackson of Palm Coast, Fl., Donna Faye James of Tampa, Fl., and Gloria McCutchen of Starke, Fl.; his 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; his two “adopted” children, Vernadette World and Marvin (Adreana) Jones, all of Jacksonville, Fl.; and his special sister in law, Pastor Earline McCutchen who has been there to pray for him.
Besides his parents, Sgt. McCutchen also joins his beloved wife, Velma McCutchen, his children, Sharona McCutchen, Syretta McCutchen, and Santell McCutchen; his brothers, David McCutchen and Wilbur Webb; and his sister, Felecia Wintons-Taylor in Heaven.
A Celebration of Sgt. McCutchen’s life will be held on Friday, July 24th, 2020 at the Jacksonville National Cemetery/4083 Lannie Rd. Jacksonville, Florida with a repass to follow at the Agape Christian Fellowship/ 10600 Colerain Rd. St. Marys, Georgia with Pastor Jonny Rodgers presiding. Inurnment will be held later at Jacksonville National Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be John McCutchen, Edward McCutchen, Jerry Stephens, Marvin Jones, Dennis Walker, and Corneal Brooks.
