Spencer Earl Penn, 30, of Jacksonville, FL, died January 17, 2021. He was born January 19, 1990 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of James Penn and Bobi Sumwalt.

He graduated from Northrop High School, Fort Wayne, Indiana in 2007. Spencer served in the United States Marine Corps from 08/2008-04/2016. During his military career he served in multiple locations including Afghanistan, Japan and Korea. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps achievement medal, Afghanistan campaign medal (w/1 star) and a Certificate of Appreciation for his patriotism.

Spencer earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Spencer earned several achievements during his education. He took part in the ASCE Student Chapter at UTSA, where he successfully led the team to the 2017 Concrete Canoe competition. After graduation, Spencer looked forward to pursuing professional licensure in the state of TX and continuing public service as a civil engineer. Spencer first worked as a Bridge engineer in San Antonio, Texas then relocated to Jacksonville, Florida to pursue new opportunities.

Spencer always wanted to leave his mark on the world. He didn’t realize that just being himself impacted so many. A true role model, it was hard not to admire his drive, discipline, intelligence and devotion. His creativity knew no bounds and he enjoyed exploring new things and partaking in a never ending list of outdoor adventures. His love for his family and friends will forever be cherished. He was truly a kind soul and will be missed beyond belief.

Spencer is survived by his parents James Penn (Starlet) and Bobi Sumwalt. He was preceded in death by grandparents Bob & Rose Bregin and Earl Penn. Survived by former step-father, Jeff Sumwalt (Kim), siblings; Jamie Penn, Dane Penn (Lexi), Gavin Sumwalt, Amanda Crews, Spencer Sumwalt (little Spencer), Emma Coffey (Arnie), Janelle Smith, Kendra Van Oosterhout and Justin Holland (Ria). He also leaves his grandmother Phyllis Penn. Spencer is survived by his lifelong love Erin Eitel, along with many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm February 6th, 2021 at the VFW, 2022 W Main St, Fort Wayne, IN 46808. Military Honors will be held at 2:30 pm. The Penn family asks that anyone who wishes to share a memory of Spencer do so after the ceremony.
