Mrs. Wanda Highsmith Bennett, age 88, of St. Marys, GA., passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 28th, 2019.
Mrs. Bennett was born on October 16th, 1931, in Screven, GA. to the late Hoke Highsmith and Kathryn Bennett Highsmith Payne. She graduated from Screven High School in 1948 and then went on to earn her Business Administration degree from Georgia State College for Women in 1950. After college, Mrs. Bennett married Henry Ardis Bennett on September 2nd, 1951, in Screven, GA. Together they owned and operated Bennett’s Drugs in St. Marys, GA. from 1953-1993. Mrs. Bennett was involved in many local organizations including the Earl of Camden NSDAR, the St. Marys Woman’s Club, and was a Society of John Wesley Fellow. She played piano, sang in the chancel choir, and was very involved in St. Marys United Methodist Church, holding several leadership positions over the years, including the office of Church Treasurer for over 43 years.
Mrs. Bennett is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Henry Ardis Bennett of St. Marys, Ga.; her daughter, Bridget Anne Bennett of St. Marys, Ga.; her two sons, Richard Bennett and Robert (Kim) Bennett, both of St. Marys, Ga.; and her three grandsons, Greg Bennett and Brooks Bennett, both of St. Marys, Ga. and Ben (Amy) Bennett, of St. Augustine, FL.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Bennett was predeceased by her step-father, Jesse Payne, and by her daughter-in-law, Beverly Pittman Bennett.
A visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday, December 1st, 2019 at Coastal Camden Funeral Home in Kingsland, GA. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, December 2nd, 2019 at St. Marys United Methodist Church with Rev. J. Roy White and Rev. Dr. Derek McAleer officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, GA. Pallbearers will be Jeff Barker, Mike Brandon, Tom Headlee, Paul Lentz, Dean Slusser, and Chris Thurner. Honorary Pallbearers will be the past and present members of the Chancel Choir of St. Marys United Methodist Church.
