William Weimann

Mr. William E. Weimann, known to most as “Wally” and to some as “Wally Gator”, departed this world on Easter Sunday, April 4th, 2021. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by his closest friends.

Wally was born in Milford, Ct. on January 23rd, 1945 to Ferdinand and Norma Strang Weimann. He grew up on Long Island Sound and had a true love of the sea long before he knew he would be spending a good part of his life on submarines, riding above and below the waves. He was drafted in 1968, but his Navy recruiter got him released from the Army, so he could join the Navy; the only catch being he had to sign up for six years! Navy life began in 1969 and continued for 25 years. During those years, he married, had one child, Natasha, moved from coast to coast twice and several places in between for school. Wally rode diesel submarines from 1970 to 1983, spending more time at sea than he did at home. He became a shellback aboard the USS Trumpetfish SS-425 when he crossed the equator during the UNITAS operation in 1971. His daughter was 3 weeks old when he left and 5 months old when he returned. His family adjusted to celebrating holidays and birthdays whenever he returned home.

Regardless of the sacrifices, Wally loved old diesel boats as his “home away from home” and his shipmates as brothers. He advanced quickly thanks to his hard work and sacrifices, making Chief in 7 years, Senior Chief in 12 and Master Chief in 15. He was transferred to Kings Bay, Ga. in 1983 for his first shore duty and retired there in 1994. When he was younger, Wally loved hunting and fishing. He spent many fall seasons deer hunting in Ohio on the Hupp family farm with the Belts, the Lawrences, and the Echevarrias. Wally was a good cook and enjoyed preparing meals for his family and friends. His friends, Robert & Julie Lawrence from Ohio stayed with him and took care of him during his final days.

Wally was preceded in death by his father, Fred Weimann, mother Norma Weimann, sisters, Norine Weimann Foster and Barbara Weimann LaCroix Dwyer; his brother in laws, Charles Foster and Bob Dwyer; nephew, Charles E. (Chucky) Foster; and his stepmother, Marcia Weimann-Haskell.

He is survived by his daughter, Natasha Weimann (her partner, Glenn Arbesfeld0 of South Plainfield, NJ; and his numerous nieces, nephews and cousins from Florida to New England. He will be sorely missed by those who knew him and loved him. We wish him fair winds and following seas.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Friday, April 9th, 2021 in the Woods-Wainwright Chapel of Coastal Camden Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, Ga with Military honors to be rendered.
